When the afternoon sun starts hitting those shallow flats just right, that's when the magic happens on Tarpon Springs' inshore waters. This four-hour PM charter puts you right in the thick of some of Florida's best redfish and cobia action, plus whatever snook and speckled trout decide to crash the party. Captain Saki and his crew know these Gulf Coast waters like the back of their hand, and they'll get you dialed in on fish that'll test your drag and make you forget all about whatever stress you brought from shore. Whether you're slinging lures for the first time or you've been chasing reds for decades, this trip delivers the kind of bent-rod action that keeps anglers coming back season after season.
You'll be fishing the productive shallows and mangrove systems that make Tarpon Springs a top-rated inshore destination. These aren't the kind of spots you stumble onto by accident – Captain Saki has spent years dialing in these seasonal honey holes, and he knows exactly when to work the grass flats versus when to tuck into the mangroves. The afternoon timing gives you prime access to those late-day tidal movements that really fire up the bite. Come May and June, this whole game changes as massive tarpon start rolling through, and if conditions line up, you might find yourself sight-casting to 80-100 pound silver kings with live bait. That's the kind of switch-up that separates a good guide from a great one – reading the water and adapting the program to whatever's biting best. All your gear is handled, from quality light tackle rods and reels to fresh bait and whatever lures are producing. Your fishing license is covered too, so you can focus on what matters most – keeping your drag tight and your drag loose when it counts.
This isn't heavy offshore gear – we're talking about finesse fishing with light tackle that lets you feel every headshake and tail slap. The shallow flats around Tarpon Springs demand a different approach than deep water fishing, and that's where the real skill shows. You'll be working grass beds, oyster bars, and mangrove shorelines where fish feed aggressively but spook easily. Captain Saki runs a well-equipped Dorado that's built for these conditions – shallow draft, quiet approach, and positioned perfectly for sight-casting when the opportunities present themselves. The boat stays spotless and the gear gets maintained like it should, because there's nothing worse than losing a trophy fish to equipment failure. When the tarpon show up in late spring, the whole program shifts to live bait presentations that require patience and precision. These aren't small fish, and when one eats, you'll know why tarpon fishing has such a devoted following along Florida's coast.

Redfish are the bread and butter of Tarpon Springs inshore fishing, and for good reason. These copper-colored bruisers love the shallow grass flats and oyster bars that define this area's prime fishing zones. Reds feed aggressively in water so shallow you can sometimes see their backs, and when they eat, they'll rip drag like a freight train. The best action typically comes during moving tides when baitfish get pushed around the structure. What makes redfish so special here is their size – you're looking at fish ranging from schoolie-sized slots up to bull reds that'll test every knot in your tackle box. They're not just strong fighters; they're smart too, often requiring precise presentations to mangroves or grass edges where one bad cast spooks the whole area.
Cobia are the wild cards that can make any trip legendary. These chocolate-brown fighters cruise the flats looking like small sharks, but when they eat, there's no mistaking what you've hooked. Cobia are curious fish that often follow rays and other bottom-stirrers, so spotting one means getting ready fast. They're strong, they jump, and they have zero quit in them. Spring through fall offers the best cobia action around Tarpon Springs, with fish ranging from 20 pounds up to monsters that'll make your arms burn. What's really cool about cobia is how they hunt – they're opportunistic predators that will crush everything from live bait to artificials, but timing and presentation matter huge.
Spotted weakfish, or speckled trout, are the technical challenge that keeps things interesting. These beautiful fish with their distinctive spots are all about finesse and location. Trout school up over grass beds and around structure, feeding heavily on shrimp and small baitfish. The afternoon bite often finds them in slightly deeper pockets within the flats, where they'll slam topwater plugs or soft plastics worked just right. Speckled trout are notorious for their soft mouths, so keeping steady pressure without

Cobia are the sharks that aren't sharks - their brown color and single dorsal fin fool plenty of anglers at first glance. These bruisers average 30-50 pounds and are absolute freight trains when hooked. Around Tarpon Springs, we find them cruising shallow structure like channel markers, wrecks, and even floating debris during spring migration from March through June. They're mostly loners, so it's about spotting individual fish rather than schools. What guests love is the sight-fishing aspect - you can actually see these fish swimming near the surface before casting. They're also top-shelf eating with firm, white meat that tastes like a cross between shark and grouper. Pro tip: use a 4-8 oz bucktail jig and work it steady near any structure - color doesn't matter as much as presentation.

Redfish are built for the shallow flats we fish around Tarpon Springs. These copper-colored fighters average 18-28 inches and love cruising 1-4 feet of water over grass beds and oyster bars. You'll spot them by their distinctive black eyespot near the tail - it's meant to confuse predators but helps us locate them. They're year-round residents here, but spring and fall offer the best action when they're more active in cooler water. What makes redfish special is their powerful runs and that bronze flash when they turn sideways fighting. They're also excellent table fare with firm, mild meat. My tip: when sight-casting, lead them by about three feet and keep your retrieve slow and steady - they'll track it down and hammer it.

Snook are Florida's signature inshore gamefish and the reason many anglers get obsessed with these waters. Most run 18-24 inches with that unmistakable black lateral line and golden color. Around Tarpon Springs, they love hanging under mangroves, around docks, and in creeks where they can ambush prey. They're structure-oriented fish that use cover like bass do up north. Spring through fall gives you the best shots, especially during spawning season when their fins turn bright yellow. What hooks people is their explosive strikes and acrobatic fights - they'll jump and run toward structure to break you off. They're also great eating when in season. Here's what works: cast tight to cover and be ready for that initial run. They're smart fish, so if you spook one, move on - it won't bite again.

Spotted weakfish, or speckled trout as most folks call them, are prime targets in our shallow grass flats. These silver beauties with dark spots typically run 12-16 inches, though we catch plenty up to 20 inches around Tarpon Springs. They're ambush predators that hang over sandy bottoms and grass beds in 3-10 feet of water, especially during warmer months. What makes them fun is they hit topwater plugs with aggressive strikes and are great for beginners since they're pretty cooperative. The meat is excellent - white, flaky, and mild. One thing to remember: they have soft mouths, so don't horse them in. My local trick is to work lures slowly near the surface, then speed up the retrieve when you see one following - that fleeing baitfish action triggers them to strike harder.
