Tarpon Springs Inshore Redfish and Sea Trout

When you're looking for a serious day of inshore fishing on Florida's Gulf Coast, this six-hour charter out of Tarpon Springs delivers exactly what you're after. Captain Saki and his crew know these waters like the back of their hands, and they'll put you on some of the most productive redfish and sea trout grounds in the state. Whether you're a weekend warrior or someone who's been working these flats for years, this trip gives you the kind of fishing time that makes the drive worthwhile. The 25' Dorado is rigged for comfort and performance, with all the tackle and live bait you need to make it count.

What to Expect on the Water

This isn't a quick morning run – you're getting a full six hours to really work the best spots around Tarpon Springs. The day starts in the shallow flats where redfish cruise the grass beds, then moves into the backcountry mangroves where sea trout hold in the deeper pockets. Captain Saki reads the tides and conditions to keep you in the fish all day long. During May and June, if you're up for it, the trip can include a run to Boca Grande for some serious tarpon action – we're talking 80 to 100-pound silver kings that'll test every bit of your drag system. The boat handles beautifully in these waters, and the crew keeps the live well stocked with premium sardines and crabs that these fish can't resist.

Techniques and Prime Spots

The beauty of this fishery is the variety of presentations you'll use throughout the day. In the morning, you might be sight-casting to tailing redfish in two feet of water, using live pinfish or soft plastics worked slowly along the bottom. As the tide changes, the crew switches up to suspending baits for sea trout around the mangrove points and oyster bars. When the tarpon are running, it's all about live sardines pitched ahead of rolling fish – pure sight-fishing at its finest. The tackle is top-shelf stuff, from medium-heavy spinning rods for the reds to lighter setups for trout. Captain Saki and Ryan know exactly which spots fire on different tide stages, so you're always fishing the most productive water at the right time.

Species You'll Want to Hook

Redfish are the bread and butter of this fishery, and for good reason. These copper-colored bruisers average 20 to 28 inches in the slot, with plenty of oversized bulls mixed in during the warmer months. They're sight-fishing targets in the shallows, where you'll watch them cruise the grass flats with their backs out of the water. Reds feed year-round in these waters, but fall and spring offer the most consistent action when they school up in big numbers. What makes them so addictive is the visual element – you see the fish, make the cast, and watch the eat happen right in front of you.

Sea trout might not have the glamour of redfish, but they make up for it in sheer numbers and eating quality. The Tarpon Springs area holds some of the best trout fishing on the Gulf Coast, with fish averaging 15 to 20 inches and occasional gator trout pushing 25 inches or better. They love the deeper grass beds and mangrove edges, especially on moving tides. Spring and fall are prime time, when cooler water temperatures get them feeding aggressively. Trout are also great for beginners since they're willing biters and fight hard for their size.

Snook are the bonus fish that can show up anywhere, but when they do, they'll make your day. These ambush predators love structure – docks, mangrove overhangs, and oyster bars where they can pin baitfish. They're most active during the warmer months and around the full and new moon phases when tides are strongest. Snook have that explosive strike that comes out of nowhere, followed by acrobatic jumps and powerful runs toward cover. They're also highly regulated, so catch and release is the name of the game, but landing one is a highlight that'll have you coming back for more.

Time to Book Your Spot

Six hours on some of Florida's most productive inshore waters with captains who know how to put you on fish – that's what this charter delivers day after day. Whether you're looking to introduce someone new to the sport or you want to test your skills against some serious fish, this trip has the flexibility to match your experience level. The all-inclusive setup means you just show up ready to fish, and the crew handles the rest. With only two anglers per trip, you're getting personalized attention and plenty of rod time. These dates

Redfish

Redfish are the bread and butter of our shallow water fishing, ranging from schoolie 16-inchers to bruiser 35+ pound bulls. They cruise oyster bars, grass flats, and mangrove edges in just 1-4 feet of water - sometimes so shallow their backs show above the surface. Year-round fishing is solid, but fall brings the best action when they school up in big numbers. What makes reds special is their powerful, drag-screaming runs and that distinctive black spot near the tail. They're also fantastic eating with mild, sweet meat. These fish aren't picky eaters - they'll hammer topwater plugs, soft plastics, and live shrimp equally well. The secret is watching for tailing fish or nervous water, then making quiet casts ahead of their direction. Once hooked, they'll pull hard toward the nearest structure, so keep steady pressure and let your drag work.

Redfish

Sea Trout

Spotted sea trout, or "specks" as we call them locally, are a staple of our grass flats fishing. Most run 14-20 inches with occasional 3-4 pounders that really bend the rod. They cruise shallow flats in 2-6 feet looking for shrimp and small baitfish, especially around dawn and dusk. Fall and early winter provide the best action when they school up in deeper holes and channels during cold fronts. What guests love about trout is their willingness to bite and their tender, flaky meat that's perfect for the dinner table. They're not the hardest fighters, but they make up for it in numbers and eating quality. The key to consistent trout fishing is working the grass edges with topwater plugs early, then switching to soft plastics as the sun gets higher. Look for nervous water and bait activity - that's where the specks will be feeding.

Sea Trout

Snook

Snook are one of Florida's premier inshore game fish, running anywhere from keeper-sized 18-inchers up to trophy 30+ pounders. You'll find them around mangrove shorelines, docks, and bridge pilings in 2-10 feet of water. They love structure and ambush points where they can blast baitfish with those lightning-fast bursts of speed. Best fishing happens during warmer months when water temps stay above 70°F - they're very temperature sensitive. What makes snook special is their explosive strike and bulldogging fight, plus they're excellent table fare with firm, white meat. During spawning season (May-September), their fins turn bright yellow around the full moon. Pro tip: cast your lure or fly past the structure and work it back alongside the cover - snook rarely chase baits into open water. They want that easy ambush meal.
